What is Saju (사주)?

Saju (사주, Four Pillars of Destiny) is a Korean system of character analysis rooted in thousands of years of East Asian philosophy. It maps a person's birth year, month, day, and hour onto a framework of the Five Elements (오행: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and the 60-cycle Sexagenary calendar (만세력). The result is not a fortune — it is a temperament profile: a structured description of innate personality traits, learning styles, relational tendencies, and elemental balance. SoMyung applies this framework specifically to children, helping parents understand why each child is wired differently and how to communicate with them more effectively.

We don't just hand you a verdict. We show the work

Most personality apps give you a result and keep the reasoning to themselves. SoMyung shows you the calculation it was built from.

The eight characters, printed

All four pillars — year, month, day, hour — shown with their original Chinese characters. Check them against any other source you like.

The Five Elements, counted

How many of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water your child actually has. Not "an energetic kid" but "Fire 3, Water 0."

The method, stated

Traditional Manseryeok with true-solar-time correction for the birthplace. If the birth time is unknown, we say so and calculate from three pillars instead of four.

We would rather be checked than believed.

Creator of SoMyung · Parent of Three

I faced the same struggles

As a parent of three, I was always searching for better ways to understand and communicate with each of my children. After earning my Myeongri Psychology Counselor Level 1 certification and completing my Master of Science in Decision Analysis from Minerva University, I combined traditional Eastern wisdom with modern analytical thinking.

What worked for my first child didn't work for my second — because each has a different innate temperament. I built SoMyung so other parents could gain these same insights easily.

What Parents Say

Better Relations

I fought with my teenage son daily. Once I learned our temperaments are opposites, I stepped back first — and real conversations began.

Mom of 8th grader

Learning Style

We tried 3 math academies. Turns out he's a self-study type. Switching to online lectures made him much happier.

Mom of 5th grader

Peace of Mind

I thought I raised him wrong because he was so sensitive. Learning it's his innate nature gave me such relief.

What the report actually looks like

Two items lifted verbatim from chapter 2 of 8. This is the report for a fictional child, Minseo.

2. This Child Is NOT…

Misunderstanding: “Minseo is just difficult and wants control.”

Reality: Minseo often wants control because it reduces uncertainty; when plans feel unstable, emotions tighten and decision-making slows.

Better response: “I can see you want things to make sense—let’s make a new plan that still fits what you need.”

Misunderstanding: “If Minseo is quiet, Minseo isn’t listening.”

Reality: Minseo may be processing carefully and will speak once the thought is organized; silence is often “thinking,” not disengagement.

Better response: “Take your time—when you’re ready, tell me the first part you want to share.”

Five items like these, followed by 6 situational scripts · the next 4 months · a 7-day experiment · a parenting card.
